Le bilan de la bousculade survenue dimanche dans le centre de l’Inde, en marge d’une fête religieuse, a grimpé à 109 morts et 133 blessés, a indiqué lundi la police.
L’accident a eu lieu à proximité d’un temple du district de Datia, dans l’Etat du Madhya Pradesh. Au moment de la bousculade, quelque 20’000 personnes se trouvaient sur un pont enjambant la rivière Sindh, avait indiqué dimanche la police.
Selon les autorités locales, une rumeur sur le possible effondrement du pont percuté par un tracteur a causé un mouvement de foule. Des pélerins sont morts par axphyxie et d’autres en se noyant, après être tombés dans la rivière.
Les hindous célèbrent actuellement Navaratri, en l’honneur de la déesse Dourga, des fêtes religieuses qui attirent des millions de personnes dans les temples.
La foule avait afflué tôt le matin sur le site pour célébrer la fin de Navaratri et jusqu’à 400’000 fidèles étaient déjà présents autour du temple de Ratangarh, situé à environ 350 km de Bhopal, la capitale de l’Etat. Des témoins affirment que la police a chargé la foule avec de lourds bâtons de bois, des lathis, ce que les forces de l’ordre ont démenti.
